Форрест Дж. Экерман Introduction: The Love and Lure of The Blind Spot
Several studies in the early part of this century examined sizedistortions for objects presented across the blind spot (eg ferreeand rand 19), but their results have always remainedcontroversial. After demonstrating that a number of important blindspot phenomena are consistent with normal interpolation, we willdescribe how comparisons with normal interpolation may helpilluminate an interesting axial asymmetry of blind spotinterpolation. The blind spotrepresents an unusual situation in which, for monocular viewing, aportion of the visual field is occluded, although there is nothingout there in the world that is doing the occluding.
The second important distinction about thesetheories is that their major goal is the segregation of surfaces fromone another, which requires a refinement of the contrast andluminance information available. These two phenomena (shrinkage of the whole and expansion ofthe parts) are illustrated in figure 8. Asdiscussed above, it is a striking fact about the perceptualexperience of partly occluded objects that we typically have adefinite perceptual sense of how these objects are completed (kanizsa1979 kanizsa and gerbino 1982 kellman and shipley 1991 michotte, thines and crabbe 1964).
He has visited over a hundred cities worldwide by train, plane, and bus in an effort to find new entrepreneurs and help people supporting them, and he and village capital have partnered with over twenty fortune 500 companies to help large institutions uncover new innovations. In fact, the visual cortex is laid out spatially so as to map onto theretinally recorded visual world, and there are indeed processes thattake place in the visual cortex that can be best described as theinterpolation of edges. Ramachandran to support the thesis that thefilling in of the blind spot occurs prior to motion and preattentiveprocessing have been found to be interpretable within this framework. This same perception occurs when the disk is occludedby the blind spot, which is at a similar eccentricity.

Introduction. The blind spot of each eye corresponds to the region of the retina where the optic nerve exits the eye. Because there are no photoreceptors associated with that region, objects obscured entirely by the blind spot remain, of course, unseen in monocular vision. However, the region of the visual field corresponding ...

Suchfindings indicate that early vision is indeed working efficiently toextract surface edges that might be specified by occlusion and thatthere is cooperativity across space in this effort. However, by presenting the cross in the upper or lowerperiphery and observing the resulting amodal completion, it is easyto tell that the polar hypothesis is the correct one in the upper orlower periphery the horizontals appear aligned and the misalignmentof the verticals becomes evident. In thepresent paper many of the interesting blind spot demonstrations oframachandran and his colleagues and others will be re-evaluated andshown to be similar in detail to the completion of occluded objects.
In this figure, the subjective triangle appears to bebrighter than the background white of the paper and a luminance edgeis seen around its entire perimeter, where in reality no physicalluminance edge exists. Perfect timing for an introspective look at our innovation economy, and how to open our eyes to the entrepreneurs and ideas that most deserve our attention. The pac men of figure 1a are perceived (amodallyrepresented) as circles which are occluded by the triangle.
Structurally similar impressions ofcompletion occur for these displays (after blind spot demonstrationsof ramachandran 1992a) whether the areas enclosed by the smallcircles are occluded by the blind spot or by a coin or thumb. With regard to color assignment inscotomata, ramachandran (1993) has clearly stated that he believesthe term filling in is metaphorical in the sense that the actualprocess is not one that begins from the outside and invades afilled-in region (p 60). For example, we normally walk about with theillusion that the entire visual field is of equal perceptualresolution, even when we may have learned that foveal acuity (presentin only the central 1deg of vision) is a different order of magnitudethan what is available in the periphery. Patterns (after blind spot demonstrationsof ramachandran 1992a) for which amodal completion is differentfoveally than in the periphery.

A blind spot, scotoma, is an obscuration of the visual field. A particular blind spot known as the physiological blind spot, "blind point", or punctum caecum in medical literature, is the place in the visual field that corresponds to the lack of light-detecting photoreceptor cells on the optic disc of the retina where the optic nerve ...
